Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Eddystone Arsenal, a branch of Remington in Pennsylvania, began producing the U.S. Rifle, Caliber .30, Model of 1917—commonly known as the M1917 Enfield—in September 1917, adapting the British Pattern 1914 (P14) rifle to fire the standard U.S. .30-06 Springfield cartridge. Over 1.18 million rifles were produced at Eddystone alone, making it the largest single source of U.S. rifles during World War I. The M1917 featured a six-round internal magazine (one more than the P14), a stronger extractor, an extended handguard, and a straighter walnut stock. As the primary service rifle of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I, it equipped approximately 75% of U.S. troops by the Armistice in November 1918. The rifle continued to see service in limited roles during World War II—especially with rear-echelon units and the U.S. Home Guard—and remained in arsenals into the Korean War era.
