Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The U.S. Rifle, Caliber .30, also known as the Springfield, is a bolt-action service repeating rifle that was primarily used during the first half of the 20th century. By the time the U.S. entered World War I, over 840,000 Springfield rifles had been produced at Springfield Armory and Rock Island Arsenal. However, pre-war production may have had some issues with metallurgy. Some receivers that were constructed of single-heat-treated case-hardened steel were improperly subjected to excessive temperatures during the forging process, which could cause the carbon to burn out of the steel and create a brittle receiver. Although there was documented evidence of some improperly forged rifles, cases of failure were rare. While several cases of serious injury from receiver failure were documented, there were no reported fatalities. Many failures were attributed to the use of incorrect cartridges, such as the 7.92×57mm Mauser. Evidence suggests that improperly forged brass cartridge cases could have further exacerbated receiver failure.

To address these issues, pyrometers were installed in December 1917 to accurately measure temperatures during the forging process. This change was made at around serial number 800,000 for rifles made at Springfield Armory and at serial number 285,507 at Rock Island Arsenal. Lower serial numbers are known as "low-number" Springfield rifles, while higher serial numbers are said to be "double-heat-treated." The Model 1903 Mark I was produced towards the end of the war, which had a cut on the left-hand side of the receiver that was meant to act as an ejection port for the Pedersen device. This specialized insert replaced the bolt and allowed the user to fire .30 caliber pistol cartridges semi-automatically from a 40-round detachable magazine. The Mark I also had a modified sear and cutoff to operate the Pedersen device, and the stock was slightly cut down on the left side to clear the ejection port. In all other respects, the Mark I is identical to the Springfield. During Mark I production, temperature control during forging was improved, and the receiver alloy was toughened by the addition of nickel.
