Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
John Browning designed the 1911 pistol to replace various service revolvers used by the United States. The Army officially adopted it on March 29, 1911, and it was called the M1911. This iconic Colt M1911 was the standard-issue sidearm for the U.S. Armed Forces from 1911 to 1985, when the Beretta M9 replaced it. During the testing phase in 1910, a single M1911 fired 6,000 rounds over two days without any malfunctions, and it was immersed in water to cool it down.
During WWI, Colt stopped the final polishing step to produce more M1911s, resulting in the “Black Army” pistols, which were black. The early war pistols had a lighter blue finish, which was more refined. The 1911 and 1911-A1 pistols were used by the United States military from 1911 to 1985, during two World Wars and the Korean and Vietnam wars. They earned a reputation as a reliable handgun with significant stopping power and are highly regarded by those who have used them.
This firearm is an interesting example, created by combining a 1919 Colt frame with an A.J. Savage slide. It's worth noting that A.J. Savage Munitions Company, a San Diego-based manufacturer, was awarded a contract to produce 100,000 pistols in July 1918. At the time, most Allied powers believed that the war would continue for at least a few more years. However, the war ended less than 6 months later, leaving Savage with no completed pistols, only parts. The slides produced by Savage were distributed to commercial sellers and some were purchased by the Ordnance Department for use as replacement parts.
The frame paired with this slide has some interesting markings, including a RIA stamp on the right side which stands for Rock Island Armory with a flaming ordnance bomb, and a FK inspector mark on the left side which stands for Frank Krack. During his tenure as Assistant Foreman of the Inspection Division at Rock Island Arsenal from September 17, 1941, until he retired on July 19th, 1946, all small arms inspected under his supervision would be stamped with his initials "FK" as well as those of the Rock Island Arsenal "RIA". Additionally, the left side of the frame is stamped with "AA" which stands for Augusta Arsenal.
