The Model 1903, like the name, was first produced in 1903. The Type III Models were chambered for .32 ACP, had 3 ¾" barrels, no barrel bushing, and were serialized from 105,051-468,096 with production dates between 1910 and 1926.

The Colt Model 1903 Pocket Hammerless Type III, also known as the Model M, is one of the most iconic and influential semi-automatic pistols of the early 20th century. Designed by John Browning and introduced in the early 1900s, the Model 1903 quickly earned a reputation for reliability, concealability, and sleek aesthetics. Despite the “Hammerless” name, the pistol actually utilizes an internal hammer concealed within its frame, contributing to its snag-free profile ideal for concealed carry. The Type III variant, produced from 1910 to 1926, removed the earlier magazine safety found in the Type II and incorporated minor mechanical refinements while retaining its .32 ACP chambering, fixed barrel, blowback operation, and 8-round magazine capacity. Its grip safety, thumb safety, and smooth contours made it a practical and popular sidearm for both civilian and military users, including General officers during WWII.
