Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Pre-Woodsman marks the earliest chapter in the development of Colt’s famed .22 rimfire automatic pistols. Introduced in 1915 simply as the Colt .22 Automatic Pistol, it would not receive the “Pre-Woodsman” designation until after later Woodsman models appeared. Designed by John M. Browning and produced through 1927, the Pre-Woodsman established the foundation for all later Woodsman-series pistols with its lightweight profile, superb balance, and excellent trigger, making it an instant favorite among target shooters and small-game hunters of the early 20th century. Its fixed sights, straight-grip frame, and early high-quality bluing reflect the manufacturing standards of Colt’s pre-Depression era craftsmanship.

Across its production span, the Pre-Woodsman saw several minor mechanical refinements—including changes to the mainspring housing and magazine design—but it remained essentially true to Browning’s original intent: a reliable and accurate rimfire pistol optimized for precision shooting. Because it predates the formal “Woodsman” line and had a comparatively modest production run, surviving examples in clean condition are considered highly collectible today. The Pre-Woodsman serves as both the historical and mechanical ancestor to the later Woodsman 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Series pistols, and its role in establishing Colt’s long-lived rimfire legacy makes it an important piece for enthusiasts and collectors alike.
