Designed by John and Matthew Browning, the Winchester Model 1890 was patented in 1888 and went on to become a cornerstone of Winchester’s rimfire lineup. As the second successful repeating slide-action .22 rifle ever made—just behind the Colt Lightning—it filled a critical gap in Winchester’s offerings, replacing the underperforming rimfire variant of the Model 1873. Between 1890 and 1932, Winchester produced approximately 849,000 Model 1890 rifles, with remaining parts assembled into rifles as late as 1941. The third model, in particular, offered a blend of reliability, shootability, and craftsmanship that made it ideal for everything from target shooting to small game hunting.
