Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 90 Third Model Takedown is a classic American pump-action rifle, representing the evolution of one of Winchester's most successful rimfire designs. Manufactured with a 24-inch octagon barrel and chambered in .22 Short, this version of the Model 1890 features a blued finish, a smooth straight-grip walnut stock, and a ribbed forearm—providing both aesthetic appeal and functional durability. Its blade front sight paired with an adjustable rear sight reflects its practical origins, particularly in shooting galleries where it gained a reputation as the quintessential "gallery gun." The third model iteration included a significant design refinement: a modified receiver that allowed the breech bolt to lock externally, improving the rifle's strength and reliability under heavy use. Additionally, the takedown feature made it easy to disassemble for transport or maintenance, a trait that further enhanced its popularity.

Designed by John and Matthew Browning, the Winchester Model 1890 was patented in 1888 and went on to become a cornerstone of Winchester’s rimfire lineup. As the second successful repeating slide-action .22 rifle ever made—just behind the Colt Lightning—it filled a critical gap in Winchester’s offerings, replacing the underperforming rimfire variant of the Model 1873. Between 1890 and 1932, Winchester produced approximately 849,000 Model 1890 rifles, with remaining parts assembled into rifles as late as 1941. The third model, in particular, offered a blend of reliability, shootability, and craftsmanship that made it ideal for everything from target shooting to small game hunting. Its widespread use in amusement park shooting galleries and as a youth training rifle solidified its legacy as one of the most iconic rimfire rifles in American history.
