Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In 1908, Colt introduced a new medium-frame revolver to replace the aging New Army & Navy models. This new design incorporated the superior double-action mechanism first seen in the Colt New Pocket and New Service revolvers. It would go on to form the foundation for all of Colt’s medium-frame double-action revolvers, culminating in the legendary Colt Python of 1955. Remarkably, the design remained so consistent over the decades that many parts from the original 1908 Army Special could still interchange with a Python manufactured as late as 2003. Engineered to handle more powerful cartridges like the .38 Special and .41 Colt, the revolver was an immediate success, especially among law enforcement. Rebranded in 1927 as the "Official Police"—after the U.S. Army never adopted it—the model became a standard-issue sidearm for police departments well into the 1960s. The Army Special was offered in both blue and nickel finishes, with barrel lengths of 4", 4.5", 5", and 6".

It was chambered in .32-20, .38 Long and Short Colt, .38 Special, and .41 Colt. Early models featured black hard rubber grips with checkering and Colt logos, which were replaced in 1923 with checkered walnut grips adorned with silver Colt medallions. Produced from 1908 until 1927, the Army Special was renamed the Official Police but continued in production until 1969 with few changes—testament to its durable design and enduring popularity.
