Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Police Positive was introduced in 1907 as an improved successor to the Colt New Police, incorporating Colt’s innovative “Positive Safety” mechanism, which prevented the hammer from striking the firing pin unless the trigger was deliberately pulled. This advancement made the revolver safer to carry and handle, quickly earning it favor among law enforcement agencies in need of a compact, lightweight, and dependable sidearm. Manufactured in a variety of configurations until 1947, the Police Positive developed a strong reputation for reliability, accuracy, and practical design. The Police Positive First Issue (1907–1927) was offered in several chamberings, including .32 Colt, .32 Colt New Police, and .38 New Police, which is essentially the .38 S&W. Barrel lengths ranged from 2 1/2", 4", 5", and 6", with finishes in either bright blue or bright nickel. Early production featured hard rubber grips, which were replaced in 1923 with checkered walnut grips adorned with silver Colt medallions.

The Second Issue (1928–1947) refined the design with a grooved top strap to reduce glare, a slightly heavier frame, and an extended grip frame that increased the distance between the trigger guard and grip, offering more comfort and space for the shooter’s hand. Colt also introduced the Police Positive Target Model, a specialized variant designed for accuracy. The Target Model First Issue (Model “G”), produced from 1907 to 1925, featured a 6" barrel, flat-top frame, and adjustable front and rear sights. It was chambered in .22 LR, .22 WRF, .32 Colt, and .32 New Police, with finishes typically in bright blue. Like the standard Police Positive, early examples carried hard rubber grips, later replaced by checkered walnut in 1923. The Target Model Second Issue (Model “C”), manufactured from 1926 to 1941, retained most features of the first but added a heavier frame, and was offered in bright blue with a limited number finished in bright nickel. Through its decades of production, the Colt Police Positive and its target variants became mainstays for both law enforcement and civilian shooters, prized for their blend of safety, handling, and dependable performance.
