Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The history of the Lefever company is quite intricate, a common issue among early gun manufacturers, particularly due to the lack of non-compete clauses at the time. In 1880, Daniel Myron Lefever patented the first commercially successful hammerless breach-loading shotgun. After several unsuccessful ventures in firearms post-Civil War, his new design quickly gained popularity. However, in 1883, “Uncle Dan” lost control of Lefever Arms Co. after a fire. Although he was appointed Superintendent of the company, A. Ames Howlett became its president. After a period of moderate success, Lefever left in 1901, taking his sons George, Charles F. (Fred), and Frank with him to establish D.M. Lefever & Sons in Syracuse, New York, where they introduced a new box lock crossbolt shotgun design. Meanwhile, Lefever Arms Co., the original company founded by Lefever but now managed by Howlett, continued making the earlier sidelock shotgun until it was sold to the Ithaca Gun Company in 1916. Ithaca used leftover stock parts from Howlett’s company to produce Lefever Arms Co. guns until around 1921. Daniel relocated to Syracuse in 1904 to start the D.M. Lefever Arms Co., moving to Bowling Green, Ohio, in 1905 before passing away in 1906, leaving behind extensive corporate documentation. At Ithaca, the Lefever-designed shotgun was removed from production in 1921 after all the old stock was depleted. In 1922, they introduced the Lefever Nitro Special, aimed at leveraging the well-known name they had acquired. This model was a budget-friendly option widely available in hardware stores and through mail-order catalogs.
