Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Police Positive Special, built on Colt’s “D” frame, marked a significant step forward in the company’s revolver evolution, offering a lengthened frame and cylinder compared to the standard Police Positive. This design allowed for chambering of longer and more powerful cartridges such as the .38 Special, giving the revolver both greater ballistic performance and broader market appeal. Introduced in 1907, the Police Positive Special quickly became one of the most popular sidearms for American police departments, who valued its balance of size, power, and reliability. With its smaller frame, it was more concealable and lighter than Colt’s larger service revolvers, yet it delivered enough stopping power to meet the growing demands of law enforcement in the early 20th century. The revolver was offered in a variety of calibers, including .32-20, .32 New Police, .38 New Police (.38 S&W), and .38 Special, giving it flexibility for both civilian and professional users. Available barrel lengths of 4", 5", and 6" allowed buyers to select a configuration that best suited duty or personal defense roles, while the bright blue and nickel finishes gave it both durability and visual appeal. The First Issue Police Positive Special, produced from 1907 to 1927, also reflected Colt’s attention to detail and evolving aesthetic. Early examples were fitted with hard black rubber grips until 1923, after which Colt transitioned to checkered walnut grips with silver Colt medallions, enhancing both ergonomics and appearance. The revolver’s solid double-action mechanism, coupled with Colt’s reputation for fine craftsmanship, made it one of the most trusted sidearms of its era. More importantly, the Police Positive Special became the foundation for nearly all of Colt’s small-frame double-action revolvers through the mid-20th century and beyond, serving as the blueprint for famous successors like the Detective Special. Its long production span, running in various forms until 1995, underscores its significance and enduring popularity. Today, the Colt Police Positive Special stands as a landmark revolver in both law enforcement and civilian history, combining practical design with historical importance and remaining a prized piece for collectors and shooters alike.
