This Colt New Service revolver showcases exquisite craftsmanship with its 75% or more coverage of floral scroll and punch dot background engraving. A notable feature is the engraved signature "JF" intertwined on the left side of the frame above the trigger, strongly suggesting the work of master engraver Jeff Flannery, known for his precision and artistry. Adding to its distinction, the revolver's butt is stamped with "H.P.D. (lanyard ring) No. 1," indicating its specific designation within the Houston Police Department's inventory. Furthermore, it is adorned with genuine ivory grips, enhancing both the aesthetic appeal and historical significance of this exceptional firearm. This combination of meticulous engraving, unique provenance, and luxurious materials underscores its status as a highly coveted collector's item and a testament to the artistry of its era.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt New Service revolver, introduced in 1898, stands as a testament to Colt's innovation and adaptation to the needs of its time. This large-frame, double-action revolver was designed to accommodate a variety of powerful cartridges, making it a versatile choice for both military and civilian use. Initially produced in calibers such as .38-40, .44-40, and .45 Colt, it quickly gained favor among law enforcement agencies and military forces. Notably, the .45 Colt variant with a 5½" barrel was adopted by the U.S. Armed Forces as the Model 1909, demonstrating its reliability and effectiveness in service. During World War I, the Colt M1917 variant emerged as a solution to supplement the shortage of M1911 pistols, utilizing half-moon clips to chamber .45 ACP rounds. This adaptation further cemented its role in military history.

Post-war, the New Service revolver continued to evolve and cater to civilian shooters, with the introduction of the .38 Special and later the .357 Magnum variants in the 1930s. The .357 Magnum's exceptional power made it a favored choice among law enforcement officers and highway patrolmen during the era of notorious public enemies like gangsters and bank robbers, due to its ability to penetrate automobile bodies and body armor of the time. Available in various barrel lengths and finishes, from blue to nickel-plated, and equipped with walnut or hard rubber grips, the Colt New Service appealed to a wide range of preferences and shooting styles. Its robust construction, featuring a swing-out hand ejector cylinder, ensured durability and ease of use, making it a classic example of Colt's commitment to quality and craftsmanship in revolver design.
