Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 12 is a slide-action (pump-action), hammerless, solid-breech .22-caliber rimfire rifle, first introduced in 1909 and manufactured until 1936. It was engineered by John D. “Jack” Pedersen, with later refinements by C. C. Loomis and G. H. Garrison. The Model 12 is a takedown design, allowing the barrel/receiver assembly to be detached from the stock/trigger group for travel or cleaning, and it ejects spent cartridges out to the right side. Its tubular magazine held up to 14 rounds of .22 Short, 11 of .22 Long, or 10 of .22 Long Rifle. In addition to standard .22 rimfire operation, certain “S-grade” (12CS, DS, ES, FS) variants were chambered for .22 Remington Special (essentially the same as .22 Winchester Rimfire). Over its production run, the Model 12 appeared in several variants or “grades” (A through F) such as the 12A (field), 12B (gallery), 12C (target/NRA), 12D, 12E, 12F (higher grades), with differences in barrel type (round vs. octagonal), wood quality, sights, engraved artwork, and other optional features. In total, Remington produced around 831,000 to 832,000 units. The Model 12 was widely appreciated in its era for its smooth action, reliability in plinking and small-game use, and its elegant yet robust design.
