Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Model 1903 Pocket Hammer was a semi-automatic pistol designed by John Browning, featuring a short-recoil mechanism. It was a compact version of the Colt 1902 Sporting Model, which in turn evolved from the Colt M1900. Despite firing the same cartridge as the military-focused Colt 1902 Military Model, the 1903 Pocket Hammer was distinct in its design, with key differences including the absence of a safety, a magazine release located at the bottom of the grip, and a unique wedge system for retaining the slide. This system utilized two links to unlock the barrel, but it also introduced a potential safety risk, as a cracked slide or loose wedge could cause the slide to exit the frame and injure the shooter.

Chambered for the .38 ACP (also known as .38 Auto), the Colt 1903 Pocket Hammer was less powerful than the 9×19mm Parabellum, though it was considered a sufficient caliber for self-defense at the time. However, the pistol's relatively weak locking mechanism was eventually superseded in 1929 by the M1911A1 in .38 Super. While the .38 Super and .38 ACP share identical case dimensions, the .38 Super operates at higher pressures, making it unsafe to use modern .38 Super ammunition in Colt M1900 series pistols.

The Colt 1903 Pocket Hammer was initially popular, but its sales declined with the advent of the M1905 in .45 ACP and the M1911. Production of the 1903 began in earnest in 1904, with annual production varying from around 1,200 to 2,300 pistols until 1917, when World War I significantly slowed manufacturing. Early models featured rounded stub hammers, which were later replaced with low-profile spur hammers beginning around 1907 in response to military interest. The transition from milled slide grooves to rear-cut slides also occurred around 1905, making early examples with milled slides especially rare.

Serial numbers for the 1903 Pocket Hammer began at 19999 in 1903 and ran backward to 16000 until 1906, after which they resumed at 20000 and continued up to 47227 by the end of production in 1927. A total of approximately 29,237 units were produced. Though it was eventually overshadowed by more powerful and modern designs, the Colt 1903 Pocket Hammer filled a niche for those seeking a smaller, more powerful pistol before the widespread adoption of larger-frame semi-automatics like the M1911.
