Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Police Positive was introduced in 1907 as an improved evolution of Colt’s earlier New Police revolvers, most notably incorporating the company’s innovative “Positive Safety” system. This internal hammer-block safety prevented accidental discharge unless the trigger was deliberately pulled, a feature that greatly enhanced confidence for law enforcement and civilian users alike. Compact, lightweight, and easy to carry, the Police Positive quickly became popular with police departments seeking a reliable small-frame revolver for daily service. The First Issue, produced from 1907 to 1927, was offered in calibers such as .32 Colt, .32 Colt New Police, and .38 New Police (.38 S&W), with barrel lengths ranging from 2½ to 6 inches. Bright blue and bright nickel finishes were standard, and the revolver was initially fitted with hard-rubber grips, later transitioning to checkered walnut with silver Colt medallions after 1923.

In 1928, Colt introduced the Police Positive Second Issue, incorporating subtle but meaningful refinements while retaining the proven core design. These changes included a grooved top strap to reduce sight glare, a slightly heavier frame for improved durability, and a lengthened grip frame that provided better finger clearance and handling. This second iteration remained in production until 1947, underscoring the model’s enduring appeal. Alongside the service variants, Colt also offered the Police Positive Target Model First Issue, known as the Model “G,” which featured a 6-inch barrel, flat-top frame, and adjustable target sights. Chambered in small-caliber rimfire and centerfire cartridges and finished in bright blue, the target model further demonstrated the versatility of the Police Positive platform, securing its reputation as one of Colt’s most successful and influential early 20th-century revolver designs.
