Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Tokyo Arsenal, commonly referred to as the Koishikawa Arsenal after the Tokyo district where it was located, was the original manufacturing site for the Type 14 Nambu pistol. Production began in Showa 3.5 (May 1928) with serial number 1 and continued until Showa 11.6 (June 1936), when all operations were transferred to the Kokura Arsenal. By the end of Tokyo’s production run, approximately 35,400 pistols had been made. One frequent point of confusion among collectors is the arsenal symbol—a stylized design resembling four cannonballs—used by both Tokyo and Kokura. While many attribute this mark solely to Kokura, Tokyo actually used it first. The symbol is reminiscent of the German Krupp logo, though the Japanese version features an additional central circle.

Early Tokyo-produced pistols often lack the (Sho) character indicating the Showa era in the date line, which did not appear consistently until around Showa 5.10 or 5.11 (October or November 1930). All pistols produced at the Tokyo Arsenal are noted for their superior craftsmanship, with sharp markings, precise tolerances, and clean machining. Today, they are especially prized by collectors for both their build quality and their historical significance as the first iteration of the Type 14 pistol.
