Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 11D Tournament is a premium-grade variant of the historically significant Model 11 autoloading shotgun, which was produced from 1911 to 1947. Based on John Browning’s long-recoil Auto-5 design, the Model 11 was the first successful semi-automatic shotgun manufactured in the United States. The "D" designation signifies the Tournament Grade, which featured upgraded aesthetics and craftsmanship. These enhancements included finely detailed floral scroll engraving on the receiver and barrel, a highly figured walnut stock with fine checkering on the pistol grip and forearm, and typically a solid ribbed barrel—often 28 inches in length—ideal for field and competitive use. Mechanically, the Model 11D retained the proven long-recoil operating system, known for its durability and relatively soft recoil compared to contemporary shotguns of its era. The shotgun cycled via the entire barrel and bolt recoiling together, providing a unique shooting experience. With a 5-round tubular magazine and fixed full choke, the Tournament model was well-suited for trap, skeet, and upland game shooting. The distinctive “humpback” receiver profile gave it a recognizable silhouette, and the attention to detail in both function and form elevated the D-grade above standard production models, appealing to both serious shooters and collectors. Today, the Remington 11D Tournament stands as a desirable artifact from the golden age of American shotguns. Its combination of refined engraving, elegant woodwork, and robust mechanical design makes it a favorite among vintage shotgun enthusiasts. Well-preserved examples are often sought after for their collectibility and usability, with some retaining their original finishes and exhibiting minimal wear. For those who appreciate classic American firearms, the Model 11D Tournament represents a blend of practical engineering and fine craftsmanship rarely seen in modern production shotguns.
