Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Léon Nagant and his brother Émile were respected firearms designers whose firm in Liège, Belgium, contributed to the development of the Russian Mosin–Nagant Model 1891 rifle, particularly in the magazine system. The M1895 revolver, designed by Léon, was adopted as the standard sidearm for the Imperial Russian Army and police, replacing earlier revolvers such as the Smith & Wesson Model 3. Initial production took place in Belgium, but in 1898, Russia acquired the manufacturing rights and began domestic production at the Tula Arsenal, eventually reaching an output of around 20,000 revolvers annually. Two main variants were produced before 1918: a double-action model for officers and a single-action version for enlisted personnel. The M1895 continued in widespread use after the Russian Revolution, serving both the Red Army and Soviet security forces.

Chambered for the proprietary 7.62×38mmR cartridge, the M1895 featured a unique gas-seal system in which the cylinder advanced forward when cocked, closing the gap between the cylinder and barrel. This boosted muzzle velocity and allowed for the use of suppressors—an uncommon trait in revolvers. The revolver’s distinctive profile and long service life gave it iconic status in Soviet history, and presentation models were sometimes awarded to officials and Party members during the 1930s as marks of distinction.
