Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Police Positive is a double-action revolver with a six-round cylinder, available in either .32 or .38 caliber. Additionally, a .22 caliber model was offered. Colt's Manufacturing Company introduced the Police Positive in 1905, primarily for sale to federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. The Police Positive revolver is made of carbon steel and in a polished blued or nickel-plated finish. The first edition of the Police Positive was published from 1907 until 1927, coinciding with the revolver's introduction. It came with Colt's typical hard rubber grips and was available in 2.5-inch (only in .32 caliber), 4-inch, 5-inch, and 6-inch barrel lengths. Furthermore, it was chambered for .32 Long Colt (also accepted .32 Short Colt), .32 Colt New Police, and .38 Colt New Police cartridges. After 1923, the standard grips were changed to checkered walnut.
The second issue of Colt began in 1928 and continued till 1947. It featured a slightly heavier frame and a serrated top strap to reduce sight glare. However, the wooden grips were still retained. Colt's "New Police" rounds were redesigned versions of existing S&W cartridges, such as the .32 S&W Long and .38 S&W. The bullet noses were flattened to avoid providing any free advertising to its main competitor. The Colt Police Positive revolver had a revolutionary feature called the Positive Lock safety mechanism, which was responsible for its introduction. This mechanism prevented the firing pin from hitting the cartridge's primer unless the trigger was deliberately pulled. The Positive Lock was designed to address the shortcomings of earlier models, such as the Single Action Army. It prevented an accidental discharge even if the hammer was struck or the pistol was dropped, making it safe to carry the revolver with all six chambers loaded. The revolver's sights were a half-moon blade front with a fixed iron open rear sight, a simple square notch shaped groove milled into the revolver's top strap.
