Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Police Positive Target represents the precision-oriented evolution of Colt’s highly successful Police Positive revolver line, which itself was an improvement over the earlier New Police through the addition of Colt’s “Positive Safety” system. Introduced in the early 20th century, the Police Positive quickly became a favorite among police departments seeking a compact, lightweight, and reliable double-action revolver. Produced in various forms from 1907 to 1947, standard Police Positive models were offered in calibers such as .32 Colt, .32 Colt New Police, and .38 New Police (.38 S&W), with barrel lengths ranging from 2½ to 6 inches. Finishes included bright blue and bright nickel, and grip materials evolved from hard rubber to checkered walnut with silver Colt medallions after 1923. The line progressed from the First Issue (1907–1927) to the Second Issue (1928–1947), the latter featuring a grooved top strap to reduce glare, a slightly heavier frame, and a lengthened grip frame for improved handling.

Within this family, the Police Positive Target models were designed specifically for accuracy and formal shooting, offering features not found on standard service revolvers. The First Issue Target Model, designated Model “G” and produced from 1907 to 1925, featured a 6-inch barrel, flat-top frame, and fully adjustable target sights, and was chambered in .22 LR, .22 WRF, .32 Colt, and .32 New Police, with a bright blue finish. The Second Issue Target Model, known as Model “C” and manufactured from 1926 to 1941, retained the same general configuration but incorporated the slightly heavier frame of the updated Police Positive design, with most examples finished in bright blue and a small number in bright nickel. Collectively, the Police Positive Target revolvers illustrate Colt’s ability to adapt a proven service platform into a refined target arm, making them historically significant and highly regarded by collectors for their craftsmanship, mechanical innovation, and role in early American target shooting.
