The Winchester Model 42, introduced in 1933 and produced until 1963, is a purpose-built .410-gauge pump shotgun widely regarded as one of Winchester’s finest small-bore designs. Approximately 164,800 were manufactured. Designed by William Roemer, the Model 42 features a smooth, reliable slide-action system with carefully simplified and scaled-down internal components that differentiate it from the larger Model 12, while maintaining a similar overall appearance. Its compact dimensions, light weight, quick handling, and mild recoil earned it the nickname “Everybody’s Sweetheart,” making it popular for small-game hunting, skeet shooting, and youth training. The Model 42 was offered in several grades — Standard, Deluxe, Skeet, Trap, and the scarce Pigeon grade — with multiple barrel lengths, barrel ribs, choke options, and finish variations to suit a range of shooting preferences.
