Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this desirable bolt-action rifle today for a penny-start auction, this is the Berlin-Suhler Waffen- und Fahrzeugwerke “BSW” Kar98k!

One of the most collectible and historically significant Kar98k variants is that produced by BSW (Berlin-Suhler Waffen- und Fahrzeugwerke). BSW manufactured Kar98k rifles from 1937 to 1939, with most surviving examples dating from 1938, making them highly sought after. Serial numbers are known to extend into the “c” block, with two rare “d” block rifles assembled at the Weimar (bcd) plant. In 1939, only about 14,000 rifles were produced before BSW shifted to MG34 manufacturing, marking their lowest full production year. Although BSW is sometimes cited as beginning Kar98k production in 1936, no verified rifles from that year are known to exist. A single rumored example has been discussed among collectors, but its authenticity is unconfirmed and likely represents either a prototype or a misattribution.

BSW is better known for its sporting arms, bicycles, and motorcycles, but continued making rifle barrels for JP Sauer into 1942 and later played a major role in MG34 and MG42 production. The company evolved directly from Simson Suhl, which was nationalized by the German regime in 1935, and continued much of Simson’s civilian manufacturing. The combination of limited production—estimated at fewer than 90,000 rifles between 1937 and 1939—and a short manufacturing window makes BSW-marked Kar98ks some of the rarest and most desirable variants among wartime German 98k rifles.

During World War II, the Soviet Union captured millions of Mauser Karabiner 98k rifles and re-furbished them in various arms factories in the late 1940s and early 1950s. These rifles, referred to by collectors as RC ("Russian Capture") Mausers, can be identified by an "X" stamped on the receiver.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Karabiner 98 kurz, often abbreviated as Kar98k, K98k, or simply Kar98, is a bolt-action rifle chambered for the 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge. Officially adopted by the German Wehrmacht on 21 June 1935, it replaced the longer Gewehr 98 as Germany’s standard service rifle. While sometimes incorrectly referred to as the "K98," that abbreviation can also refer to earlier or foreign models, such as the Polish Kb wz.98a. The Kar98k was a refined evolution of the Mauser rifle line—shorter and lighter than its predecessors—making it more suitable for modern infantry combat, particularly in urban or close-quarters settings, while still retaining the power and accuracy of the full-sized 7.92×57mm round. It featured a five-round internal magazine fed by stripper clips or individual cartridges and operated on a manually cycled bolt-action system.

Although the German military later introduced semi-automatic and select-fire rifles like the Gewehr 43 and Sturmgewehr 44, the Kar98k remained the Wehrmacht’s primary infantry weapon throughout World War II due to its durability, reliability, and accuracy. It was issued widely, not only to front-line infantry but also to officers, machine gun crews, and snipers, the latter often equipped with scoped variants for long-range precision. After the war, millions of Kar98ks were captured by the Soviets and distributed globally as military aid.
