Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson .45 Hand Ejector U.S. Army Model 1917 is a distinguished piece of American military history, known for its rugged design and dependable performance during World War I. Produced between 1917 and 1918, this revolver was originally designed to accommodate the .45 ACP cartridge, addressing the need for reliable sidearms during a critical time. Characteristically, it features a 5.5-inch barrel, a hand-ejector mechanism for swift reloading, and a blued steel finish that ensures durability. Its checkered walnut grips offer a secure hold, while the fixed front and rear notch sights enhance accuracy. In addition to its service in the U.S. Army, a notable number of these revolvers were produced under a Brazilian contract. Approximately 25,000 Model 1917s were made for the Brazilian government, each stamped with the Brazilian crest on the sideplate and the date "1937." The large shipment of 1938 primarily included revolvers within the serial number range 181983 to 207043, while a 1946 shipment covered serial numbers from 207196 to 207989. Earlier Brazilian-marked examples have been reported in serial number ranges such as 165910, 168220, and 169740.

These Brazilian contract revolvers are distinguished by a small S&W trademark on the left side of the frame and "Made in USA" on the right side. They are equipped with a lanyard ring, a serrated trigger, and a checked spur hammer. While most feature checkered wood stocks with a large silver S&W medallion, some are found with smooth wood grips. The hammer and trigger are marked with "REG. U.S. PAT. OFC.," and patent dates are inscribed on the top of the barrel, with "S&W D.A.45" on the left side. A significant number of these revolvers were imported in 1990 and typically bear an importer's mark
