Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Carcano M38, introduced in 1938, was a compact, modernized evolution of Italy’s long-serving M91 rifle, designed to improve ergonomics and handling. It featured a slightly shortened action, a redesigned bolt, refined sights, and subtle modifications to the stock and handguard, making it easier to maneuver in the field. The rifle retained the reliable internal clip-fed bolt-action system familiar to Italian troops, balanced durability with reduced weight, and included a distinctive folding bayonet and side-mounted sling swivels for greater utility. Early M38 rifles were chambered in the new 7.35×51mm cartridge, though production eventually reverted to the traditional 6.5×52mm round due to logistical challenges and performance considerations. Despite its limited numbers, the M38 holds historical significance as a transitional model, bridging the original M91 design with Italy’s efforts to modernize its infantry weapons on the eve of World War II.
