Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Swiss Karabiner Model 1931, better known as the K31, is a highly regarded bolt-action rifle that served as the standard-issue infantry weapon for Switzerland’s militia from 1933 until 1958. Designed at Waffenfabrik Bern, the K31 was developed to replace the earlier models, the K11 and the 1911, and is influenced by the Schmidt-Rubin series. With a barrel length of 25.67 inches and chambered in the 7.5x55mm Swiss (GP11), it features a 6-round detachable magazine. The K31’s unique straight-pull bolt action allows for rapid cycling, enabling faster follow-up shots compared to traditional bolt-action designs, making it particularly effective in combat situations. Another notable aspect of the K31 is its impressive accuracy. Many of these rifles can achieve one MOA (minute of angle) performance, meaning they can group shots within one inch at 100 yards, even when using the factory iron sights. This level of precision sets the K31 apart from its contemporaries, such as the Springfield, Mosin-Nagant, and Mauser K98, which do not consistently meet this accuracy standard. The rifle’s design and engineering reflect a commitment to precision, and this has made the K31 a sought-after piece among collectors and shooting enthusiasts.

The K31's historical significance is underscored by its role in maintaining Swiss neutrality during World War II. The rifle's reputation for reliability and accuracy is believed to have contributed to a perception that Switzerland would be a formidable opponent, deterring potential invasions. As a result, the K31 not only represents a key component of Switzerland's military history but also remains a cherished firearm for its performance and craftsmanship. Its relatively low production number—just 528,230 units—adds to its allure, with unique characteristics found in different batches reflecting the decisions made by the Swiss military over the years.
