Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Carcano is the frequently used name for a series of Italian bolt-action, internal clip-fed, repeating military rifles and carbines. Introduced in 1891, the rifle was chambered for the rimless 6.5×52mm Carcano round (Cartuccia Modello 1895). It was developed by the chief technician Salvatore Carcano at the Turin Army Arsenal in 1890 and was originally called the Modello (model) 91 or simply M91. Successively replacing the previous Vetterli-Vitali rifles and carbines in 10.35×47mmR, it was produced from 1891 to 1945. The M91 was used in both rifle (fucile) and shorter-barreled carbine (Moschetto) form by most Italian troops during World War I and by Italian and some German forces during World War II. The rifle was also used during the Winter War by Finland and again by regular and irregular forces in Syria, Libya, Tunisia, and Algeria during various postwar conflicts in those countries. The Carcano rifle had several variants that shared the same Carcano bolt action and were fed by an en-bloc clip.
The Model 1938 Cavalry carbines mirrored the original M91 cavalry carbines but featured fixed sights. FNA-Brescia did return to the adjustable rear sight (200 meter battle sight with 600-1500 meter adjustable) when they began producing in 6.5x52mm again. Some may have previously produced unused stocks for the M91/28 rifles intended to equip the M28 grenade launcher. These will feature prominent replacement wood fittings in a bid to recycle raw materials. Produced until 1944. These rifles were introduced in the new 7.35x51mm cartridge but later reverted back to 6.5x52mm because of logistical issues in the Italian military. Caliber may be determined by reading the rear sight.
