Markings: Standard / The left side of the slide is stamped with the U.S. & S. CO. logo along with “U.S. & S. CO. / Swissvale, PA. U.S.A.”. The left side of the frame, below the slide release, is stamped with the inspector's “WB” initials, which refers to the inspector Waldemar Broberg. Also, a letter “P” is stamped below the magazine release. The right side of the frame is stamped “United States Property M1911A1 U.S. Army / No752378" and “RIA” is stamped below the serial number. The serial number indicates a Colt frame.
Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Union Switch & Signal Company of Swissvale, Pennsylvania—primarily a manufacturer of railroad signaling equipment—was awarded a contract on May 5, 1942, to produce M1911A1 pistols during World War II. While the original contract called for 200,000 pistols, it was quickly scaled back to 30,000 units due to shifting military needs. However, on June 26, 1943, after most production had wound down and many workers had shifted to making M1 Carbine parts, the company received a new letter of intent for an additional 25,000 pistols. In total, 55,000 M1911A1 pistols were delivered by U.S. & S, with final shipments made by November 27, 1943. These pistols are serial numbered from 1,041,405 to 1,096,404 and are the second rarest variant of WWII-era M1911A1 pistols, second only to the Singer pistols, of which only 500 were produced. While all complete U.S. & S. pistols fall within their unique serial number block, many more slides were manufactured than were assembled into complete pistols. These extra slides were distributed as spare parts and often later mated with frames from other manufacturers during rebuilds or refurbishments, leading to some confusion among collectors. Despite being a newcomer to firearms production, Union Switch & Signal earned a strong reputation for their meticulous manufacturing standards.
