Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The FÉG Pistole M37 “jhv” was the German-contract version of Hungary’s Model 1937 semi-automatic pistol, manufactured by Fémáru, Fegyver és Gépgyár (FÉG) in Budapest. Originally developed for the Hungarian military and chambered in 9x17mm Browning Short (.380 ACP), the pistol was modified for German use beginning in 1941, rechambered in 7.65x17mm Browning (.32 ACP) to meet Wehrmacht logistical standards. Designated Pistole 37(u)—with the “u” indicating Ungarn (Hungary)—these pistols were marked with the factory code “jhv” followed by a two-digit year, such as jhv/41 or jhv/43, and were stamped with Waffenamt acceptance marks, most notably WaA58 for earlier models and WaA173 for later ones. German-contract production ran from 1941 until early 1944 and totaled approximately 85,000 pistols, with serial numbers ranging roughly from 1 to 90,000. The initial contract (c.50,000 pistols) bore the jhv/41 code, while the second (c.35,000 pistols) used the jhv/43 code.

A manual thumb safety was added at German request, particularly for Luftwaffe use, and was not present on the original Hungarian military-issue M37 pistols. Early examples featured finely polished finishes and precise machining, while later production showed a shift toward simplified, utilitarian wartime finishes. Despite being a secondary sidearm, the FÉG Pistole M37 was appreciated for its reliability, straightforward design, and consistent quality even under wartime manufacturing constraints.
