Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 74 is a semi-automatic rifle chambered in .22 Long Rifle and was produced from 1939 to 1955. Designed as an affordable and dependable sporting rifle, it quickly earned popularity among American shooters for small-game hunting, plinking, and target practice. The Model 74 featured a tubular magazine located in the buttstock, loaded through a port in the right side of the stock, and it was offered in two chamberings: .22 Short and .22 Long Rifle (each requiring its own specific version). Standard configuration included a 24-inch barrel—slightly longer than many contemporary rimfires—striking a balance between accuracy and handling. The rifle came with a blue finish on the barrel and receiver, a simple dovetail blade front sight, and an adjustable rear sight. The stock was made of plain walnut, giving the rifle a sturdy yet unpretentious appearance, and its semi-automatic blowback action provided reliable cycling with minimal effort from the shooter.

Winchester manufactured approximately 406,574 Model 74s before discontinuing the line in 1955, replacing it with the Model 77 in 1955, not the Model 141. While primarily a civilian sporting arm, some Model 74s were reportedly issued to British Auxiliary Units during World War II due to their compact, semi-automatic design. Today, the Model 74 is remembered as a practical, low-cost rimfire that offered shooters a combination of reliability, simplicity, and solid performance. It remains a collectible piece of Winchester’s 20th-century production history.
