The Winchester Model 74 is a semi-automatic rifle chambered in .22 Long Rifle and was produced from 1939 to 1955. Designed as an affordable and dependable sporting rifle, it quickly earned popularity among American shooters for small-game hunting, plinking, and target practice. The Model 74 featured a tubular magazine located in the buttstock, loaded through a port in the right side of the stock, and it was offered in two chamberings: .22 Short and .22 Long Rifle (each requiring its own specific version). Standard configuration included a 24-inch barrel—slightly longer than many contemporary rimfires—striking a balance between accuracy and handling. The rifle came with a blue finish on the barrel and receiver, a simple dovetail blade front sight, and an adjustable rear sight.
