Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Mosin–Nagant, officially designated the “Three-Line Rifle, Model 1891,” was developed between 1882 and 1891 and adopted by the Russian Empire as its standard infantry rifle. Known in Russia and the former Soviet Union as vintovka Mosina and informally as mosinka, it is a five-shot, bolt-action rifle with an internal magazine, chambered in 7.62×54mmR. It became one of the most mass-produced military bolt-action rifles in history, with over 37 million units manufactured across various models. The most prolific variant was the M91/30, adopted in 1930 as a modernization of the earlier M1891 Dragoon rifle. It featured a shorter barrel, a more robust hooded front sight, and an updated tangent rear sight graduated to 2,000 meters, while retaining the five-round stripper clip–fed magazine. Early M91/30 rifles used machined hexagonal receivers, but production transitioned to round receivers by 1935–1936 to streamline wartime manufacturing. These rifles were produced in massive quantities, especially during World War II, at the Izhevsk and Tula arsenals—millions were issued to Soviet infantry during the Great Patriotic War.

Though relatively heavy and somewhat outdated by mid-century standards, the M91/30 was valued for its rugged construction, reliability in extreme conditions, and effective range. It served the Soviet Union throughout WWII and remained in use in various forms into the postwar era. Today, the Mosin–Nagant remains an iconic symbol of Russian and Soviet military history, prized by collectors and shooters alike for its durability, simplicity, and historical legacy.
