Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this historic semi-automatic pistol today for a penny-start auction, this is the Mauser “byf” P.08 Luger!

According to the included paperwork, this Mauser Parabellum pistol, serial number 2675k, was produced in 1942—part of the final year of military Luger production, which ended as the Walther P-38 became the Wehrmacht's standard sidearm. It was manufactured by Mauser in Oberndorf under the supervision of August Weiss. All 42-byf pistols were military-issued, with an average monthly output of 9,150 and a peak of over 11,000 in February 1942. This pistol belongs to the “k” suffix block (1k–10000k). The total production of the 42-byf pistols is estimated to be 109,518. Distribution was as follows: 68,676 to the Army, 27,191 to the Luftwaffe, and 2,551 to the Kriegsmarine. These pistols feature P.08 frame markings, eagle/135 acceptance stamps (from inspector Major Rosenhagen), and test proofs with the eagle over swastika. All the 42-byf pistols were salt-blued, with most showing high-quality finishes, and fitted with black plastic grips.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Pistole Parabellum, also known as the Luger or Luger P08, is a toggle-locked, recoil-operated semi-automatic pistol. Produced in various models by several nations from 1898 to 1949, the Luger was initially patented by Georg Luger as an improvement over the Borchardt C-93. It was first manufactured by the German arms company Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) under the name Parabellum Automatic Pistol, Borchardt-Luger System. The first production model was the Model 1900 Parabellum, followed by the Marinepistole 1904, which was designed for the Imperial German Navy. The Luger was officially adopted by the Swiss military in 1900, the Imperial German Navy in 1906, and the German Army in 1908. It served as the standard service pistol for several countries, including Switzerland, Portugal, the Netherlands, Brazil, Bolivia, and Bulgaria.

In Germany, it was adopted in a slightly modified form as the Pistole Modell 1908 (Pistole 08), chambered in 9×19mm. The Luger was later replaced in German service by the Walther P38. The pistol is most famously associated with Germany during both World War I and World War II, as well as the interwar Weimar Republic and the postwar East German Volkspolizei.
