Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
By the late 1930s, Britain’s urgent need to replace the outdated SMLE rifle led to the adoption of the Rifle, No. 4 Mk I in November 1939. While the design was primarily developed by the Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA), the Savage Arms Company in the United States played a crucial role in mass-producing the No. 4 Mk I during World War II, especially under the Lend-Lease program. Savage’s production began around 1941–1942 and included both the original No. 4 Mk I and the later simplified No. 4 Mk I* variant, with the latter designed for easier and faster manufacturing to meet wartime demands. The Savage No. 4 Mk I closely followed the British design, featuring the characteristic protruding barrel and squared-off charger bridge that made machining easier compared to the older SMLE. It also retained the new receiver-mounted aperture battle sight, which allowed soldiers to acquire targets more quickly and accurately than the previous tangent-style sights. The Savage-built rifles were known for their solid construction, often with minor variations in finish and markings distinct from their British-made counterparts. Savage’s production primarily shifted toward the No. 4 Mk I* variant, which replaced the bolt release catch with a milled slot in the bolt track, streamlining the mechanism and simplifying assembly.

These rifles were supplied in large numbers to British Commonwealth forces, supplementing those made in Canada by Long Branch and in Britain by BSA. After the war, many Savage No. 4 rifles were upgraded or converted to postwar standards, but the originals remain valued by collectors today for their role in American support of the British war effort. The Savage No. 4 Mk I and the No.4 Mk I* stand as a significant example of international cooperation in wartime arms production, combining British design with American industrial capacity to produce a durable and effective infantry rifle that served throughout the conflict and beyond.
