Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The M1911 (Colt 1911 or Colt Government) is a single-action, recoil-operated, semi-automatic pistol chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge. The pistol's formal U.S. military designation as of 1940 was Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911 for the original model adopted in March 1911, and Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911A1 for the improved M1911A1 model which entered service in 1926.
The 1911 and 1911-A1 pistols served the military of the United States from 1911 to 1985, through two World Wars and the Korean and Vietnam wars. They gained a reputation as a reliable handgun with plenty of stopping power, and are held in high regard by those who have used them. This is a 1911-A1 pistol made by Colt in 1943 during WWII.
This particular pistol has a "WB" inspectors mark. During the assembly of these pistols the inspectors would perform a function check on the lower assembly. If a pistol lower were to pass it would get an inspectors stamp on the top of the frame next to the disconnector hole. Once the upper assembly was added and the entire pistol passed it's function check the inspectors stamp on the frame below the slide stop was added. The inspector stamp of W.B. is for Colonel Waldemar S. Broberg. He was the Army Inspector of Ordnance from July 1st, 1941 to June 16th, 1942 in the Hartford/Springfield Ordnance District.
