Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Enfield No. 2 was a British top-break revolver chambered in .38 S&W and manufactured from 1930 to 1957. It served as the standard sidearm for British and Commonwealth forces during World War II, alongside the Webley Mk IV and the Smith & Wesson Victory Model, which were also chambered in .38 S&W. It is important to note that the .38 S&W cartridge is sometimes referred to as ".380" in the context of British service revolvers. However, this should not be confused with the modern .380 ACP pistol cartridge. The Enfield No. 2 Mk I, the initial variant, featured a full-spur hammer and was designed as a double-action/single-action revolver, allowing shooters to either cock the hammer manually for a lighter trigger pull or use the trigger with the hammer uncocked. The Mk I was produced until 1939, when it was succeeded by the Mk I*, which incorporated several changes based on a new order. Approximately 55,000 Mk I revolvers were manufactured, with some being converted to Mk I* standards during factory repairs. This transition reflects the ongoing adjustments made to the revolver to meet evolving military requirements. For additional details on the Enfield No. 2, including stamps and markings, refer to Ian Skennerton’s work on the .380 Enfield Revolver No. 2.
