The Enfield No.2 MKI was a British top-break revolver that utilized the .38 S&W cartridge. Manufactured from 1930 until 1957, it served as one of the primary sidearms for British and Commonwealth forces during the Second World War, alongside the Webley Mk IV and the Smith & Wesson Victory Model, both chambered in the same caliber. In the aftermath of the First World War, the British Government recognized the need for a smaller and lighter sidearm. The decision was made to adopt a .38 caliber revolver firing a long, heavy 200-grain soft lead bullet as a replacement for the larger .455 (11.6 mm) Webley service revolvers. While the .455 cartridge was effective for stopping power, its significant recoil complicated marksmanship training, especially for minimally trained soldiers. The new design aimed to provide a weapon that would be easier to control and quicker to master, enhancing the likelihood of hitting an enemy at close ranges.

The choice of a long, heavy, round-nosed lead bullet in the .38 caliber cartridge, known as the .38/200, was intended to maximize wounding potential. This bullet design, which was minimally stabilized, often exhibited a tendency to "keyhole" or tumble upon impact, theoretically increasing its effectiveness against human targets at short distances. The .38/200 cartridge was already popular in civilian and police use, particularly known in the U.S. as the ".38 Super Police" load. Initially, the British firm Webley & Scott proposed their Webley Mk IV revolver in .38/200 caliber. However, rather than adopting this design, the British authorities developed a revolver at the Royal Small Arms Factory in Enfield. The resulting Enfield-designed revolver closely resembled the Webley Mk IV but featured internal differences. The Enfield No.2 revolver had three main variants.
The first, the MKI, featured a full-spur hammer and was capable of both double-action and single-action firing, allowing the shooter to either thumb-cock the hammer or pull the trigger with the hammer undocked. The second variant, the Mk I*, had a spurless hammer and was double-action only, meaning the hammer could not be thumb-cocked. Finally, the Mk I** represented a further simplification of the Mk I* for wartime production but was discontinued shortly thereafter due to safety concerns regarding some of the modifications made during its production. Throughout its service, the Enfield No. 2 revolver was issued not only to British forces but also to Commonwealth nations, making it a versatile and widely recognized sidearm.
It was particularly noted for its reliability in harsh conditions and was often favored by officers and support personnel. After the war, the Enfield No. 2 continued to see service in various capacities, including police and security forces and has since become a collector's item, appreciated for its historical significance and distinctive design.
