Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington “The Sportsman” Riot shotgun is a rare and historically notable variation of Remington’s famed semi-automatic shotgun line, developed as a response to both civilian and law enforcement needs during the mid-20th century. Originally introduced in the 1930s, “The Sportsman” was a modified version of the Remington Model 11, designed with a limited three-shot capacity (two in the magazine and one in the chamber) to comply with federal migratory bird hunting regulations. However, in the "Riot" configuration, the shotgun was adapted for close-quarters defense and policing roles. Riot variants typically featured a shorter barrel—commonly around 20 inches—a plain muzzle without choke, and a more utilitarian finish, emphasizing fast handling and maneuverability over range and pattern control.

Though not widely issued to the military, “The Sportsman” Riot shotguns were favored by some law enforcement agencies and civilian users for their proven reliability, sturdy all-steel construction, and the confidence-inspiring long-recoil action designed by John Browning. They often retained the traditional walnut stock and fore-end, giving them a classic appearance despite their tactical role. Unlike military-marked Remington riot guns, these commercial riot shotguns were not adorned with U.S. martial markings, making them somewhat more subtle but no less capable. Today, they are valued by collectors and enthusiasts for their craftsmanship, rarity, and role in bridging the gap between hunting shotguns and early defensive semi-autos.
