Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Presented here is a C&R U.S. Smith-Corona Model 1903A3 Bolt Action Infantry Rifle, which was manufactured in Syracuse, New York in 1943. The 1903A3 rifle was produced from 1903 to 1949, and over 3,000,000 units were made during that period. At the beginning of World War II, Smith-Corona stopped producing typewriters and started collaborating with Remington Arms and High Standard Manufacturing Company to manufacture Model 1903A3 Springfield Rifles. In total, Smith-Corona manufactured 234,580 rifles during the war.
The Springfield Model 1903, also known as the United States Rifle, is a magazine-fed, bolt-action service repeating rifle that was primarily used during the first half of the 20th century in America. On June 19, 1903, it was officially adopted as a bolt-action rifle by the United States military and was used in World War I. The faster-firing semi-automatic eight-round M1 Garand replaced it as the standard infantry rifle starting in 1936. However, since the U.S. did not have enough M1 rifles to arm all troops during World War II, the Springfield remained in service as a standard-issue infantry rifle. It was also used as a sniper rifle from 1936 to 1975, including in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Today, it is still popular as a civilian firearm, a historical collector's piece, a competitive shooting rifle, and a military drill rifle.
The Model 1903 Springfield was initially chambered in a new .30-03 caliber. This caliber employed a rimless, necked-down case with a round-nosed bullet weighing 220 grains. This bullet left the muzzle of the 24-inch barrel at around 2,300 feet-per-second, making it suitable for military work. However, when the Germans adopted a superior pointed spitzer bullet in 1904, the Americans followed suit with their own version. This new version had a 150-grain cupro-nickel-jacketed bullet that boosted the older round's velocity by around 400 fps. Thus, the famous .30-06 was born.
