Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith-Corona 1903A3 represents one of the more interesting chapters in U.S. World War II arms production, as it came from a company best known for typewriters rather than rifles. Contracted in early 1942, Smith-Corona was initially tasked with producing 100,000 rifles, a figure that soon expanded to roughly 380,000 as the Army reaffirmed its confidence in the 1903 platform. Despite lacking a firearms manufacturing background, the company quickly adapted—developing machinery, tooling, and processes that allowed the first rifles to be delivered by late 1942. By December of that year, the company produced its first 5,000 rifles, ultimately reaching a steady output of about 5,000 per month, demonstrating both industrial flexibility and wartime urgency.

This example, built in 1943, showcases the Parkerized finish, 24-inch barrel, and robust walnut stock typical of the model. Its blade front and adjustable peep rear sights, paired with the 1903A3’s nickel-steel receiver, contributed to the rifle’s reputation for excellent durability and combat-effective accuracy. Smith-Corona rifles are mechanically and functionally similar to their Remington-made counterparts, yet they are often prized by collectors for their distinctive manufacturer history and consistent build quality. Reports from the field frequently highlighted these rifles’ reliability, cementing the Smith-Corona 1903A3 as a respected and dependable service arm among the Springfield family.
