According to the owner, this rifle was manufactured in 1943 and sporterized in 1954. As part of the sporterization process, the original stock was replaced with a hand-carved Walnut Monte Carlo stock, enhancing both its aesthetics and ergonomics. Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith-Corona 1903-A3 is a historically significant bolt-action rifle chambered in .30-06, produced during World War II to meet the U.S. military’s growing demand for service rifles. Featuring a 22.5-inch barrel and a blued finish, this rifle was built for durability and reliability in combat conditions. It is equipped with a dovetail white bead blade front sight and a Lyman 4X scope, offering improved target acquisition and precision shooting. The hand-carved walnut stock adds both aesthetic appeal and functionality, providing a firm grip and traditional craftsmanship that enhances its collector’s value. Standard markings, including the SC and flaming bomb insignia on the barrel, authenticate its wartime origins and reinforce its connection to the Smith-Corona Typewriter Company, which played a crucial role in rifle production during the war.

As one of the two primary manufacturers of the M1903A3, Smith-Corona’s involvement began in 1942, when the U.S. Army Ordnance Department sought additional contractors to supplement Remington’s rifle production. Initially slated to produce the standard M1903, Smith-Corona quickly transitioned to the M1903A3 variant, which incorporated several wartime expedients to speed up manufacturing. These changes included stamped metal components, simplified rear sight bases, and the removal of non-essential machining features. Smith-Corona’s rifles were functionally identical to Remington’s but had minor distinguishing characteristics, including unique serial number blocks and receiver markings. Despite initial procurement challenges, the company successfully ramped up production, delivering thousands of M1903A3 rifles for use by American forces.

The Smith-Corona 1903-A3 remains a prized piece of military history, reflecting both the ingenuity of wartime manufacturing and the adaptability of American industry during World War II. Its robust bolt-action design, long-range accuracy, and historical significance make it a favorite among collectors, historians, and marksmen alike. Whether appreciated for its hand-carved walnut stock, its practical application as a precision rifle, or its place in the broader narrative of American arms production, this firearm stands as a testament to the era’s craftsmanship and engineering.
