Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The 1911 and 1911-A1 pistols served the military of the United States from 1911 to 1985, through two World Wars and the Korean and Vietnam wars. They gained a reputation as a reliable handgun with plenty of stopping power, and are held in high regard by those who have used them. Early in WWII, Colt couldn’t produce enough pistols for the military, and in 1942, contracts were let to Remington Rand, Ithaca, and the Union Switch and Signal Company to produce pistols. Ithaca didn’t procure enough manufacturing equipment to meet their schedules, and early pistols produced in 1942 used WWI surplus Colt receivers, and in early 1943 used slides and receivers purchased from Colt. By July 1943, full production was finally achieved.
This pistol is a hybrid with a Union Switching Signal frame and an Ithaca slide. We believe this 1911 A1 is a National Match rebuild from Springfield Armory in the late 50's based on the barrel stamping "NM7267717", the height & style of sights, and the last 4 digit of the serial stamped on the right side of the slide.
According to https://www.oldcolt.com/pages/1911-national-match-pistols-production-numbers-and-notes-1955-1968 "Note 1: SA stopped stamping the last 4 digits of the serial number on the right side of the slide in 1962, but starting in 1963 or 1964, they stamped the last 4 digit of the frame serial number on the slide under the firing pin stop. They are stamped, two on top of the firing pin hole and two below the hole. **known good examples of 1963 and later NMs have been observed that did not have the last 4 digits of the frame serial number under the firing pin stop. Note 2: 1957 & 1958 pistols may be found with front strap pad removed. Some of the 57/58 pistols can have plain or stippled front straps. Note 3: All NMs used the same barrel bushing NM7267718".
Although this could be considered a parts gun, its nice finish should still garner a lot of interest from the collectors of WWI and WWII pistols, some of whom will be interested in buying the pistol just for the parts. This pistol is also a nice find for anyone interested in a top-quality pistol. It is perfect for home protection, SASS Wild Bunch side matches, and auto pistol matches at your local club.
