Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Karabiner 98 kurz, often abbreviated as Kar98k or K98k, is a bolt-action rifle chambered for the 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge. It was adopted by the German Wehrmacht as the standard service rifle on 21 June 1935. This rifle was one of the final developments in a long line of Mauser military rifles and should not be confused with the K98, which is a Polish carbine and a copy of the Kar98a.
The Karabiner 98k was the main rifle used by the German army during World War II, although they also used semi-automatic and fully automatic rifles. The Karabiner 98k continued to be the primary service rifle until the end of the war in 1945, even though other types of rifles were also used. Afterward, the Soviets captured millions of Karabiner 98k rifles and distributed them as military aid. Due to this, the Karabiner 98k rifle continues to be used in conflicts around the world, as they are taken out of storage during times of strife.
The Karabiner 98k rifles' receivers were marked with a factory code that indicated the manufacturing date and location. Initially, the codes were started with "S/" and ended with "K" for the year 1934 or "G" for 1935. The intervening numeric code represented the location. However, after 1935, the year of manufacture was imprinted on the receiver ring using a two- or four-digit year instead of a letter suffix. In 1937, the "S/" prefix was removed, and letters were used instead for location codes, although some manufacturers still used numeric codes past that year. This particular rifle has the letter code "bcd" and the number "4" indicating that it was produced by Gustloff Werke in 1944.
