Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The M38 carbine, based on the M1891/30 design, was produced at the Izhevsk arsenal from 1939 to 1945, and at Tula in 1940 and 1944. It was primarily designed for second-echelon and noncombatant troops. Only a few M38 carbines were made in 1945, making them highly desirable among collectors. This carbine features a shortened barrel and stock, measuring 1000 millimeters (40 inches) in overall length compared to the M1891/30's 1230 millimeters (48 inches). It was not designed to accept a bayonet, specifically crafted so that the standard M1891/30 bayonet would not fit. However, many M38 carbines were fitted with M44 stocks as a wartime measure. M38s in their original stocks are more valuable than those in M44 pattern stocks. The M38 was ultimately replaced by the M44 carbine in 1944.
