Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The M1911A1 is a single-action, semi-automatic, magazine-fed, recoil-operated pistol chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge. The successor to the Colt Model of 1911 was adopted in 1924 and was manufactured by Colt as well as by new contractors, including Remington Rand, Ithaca Gun Company, Union Switch & Signal, and Singer. Here we present a Remington-Rand Model of 1911A1 U.S. Army Pistol, made in 1944 in Syracuse, New York. John Moses Browning’s famous pistol was adopted by the U.S. government in 1911 and attained iconic status throughout both World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, and beyond. This one was made in the middle of World War II. The Model 1911 series of pistols is one of the most successful small arms designs of the 20th century, and in all of modern warfare history, for that matter. The handgun has been produced in quantity in the United States, Argentina, and Norway (the latter two under license production as the M1914 and the M1927 respectively) and was fielded in both World Wars and many of the major and minor conflicts of the century, eventually becoming a commercial success. The Model 1911 continues service in many forms today and is still a favorite among sporting, security, and casual gun lovers all over the world.
When World War II broke out, Remington-Rand had been a typewriter company for 55 years. Nevertheless, the United States needed war material and many manufacturers were pressed into service building things that they had never built before for the war effort. But why didn’t Uncle Sam get Remington Arms to build the pistols? The answer is really pretty simple. The War Department needed Remington Arms to do what it did best and that was to produce ammunition. Other folks could crank out the pistols.
Remington Rand was awarded its first order on March 16th, 1942, for a total of 125,000 1911A1 pistols. The company had no experience building pistols at the time it was awarded the contract. Remington Rand formed a new division to take charge of building the pistols. The division formed was designated Remington Rand “C” Division. After winning the contract, they converted a vacant plant once used for building typewriters to the production of M1911A1 pistols. The old plant was located on Dickerson Street in Syracuse, N.Y. By March of 1945 they were building the lowest price pistol in the war effort and quality was considered second to none. By the end of the war, Remington Rand had produced over 875,000 pistols, almost twice as many as Colt and Ithaca combined.

The Ithaca Gun Company was established in Ithaca (NY) in 1883 by William Henry Baker and Leroy Smith together with several partners. The company was responsible for much of the early industry of Tompkins County, especially during World War I and World War II, and counted among its patrons John Philip Sousa, Annie Oakley, and Alfred Lee Loomis. At the time, Sousa was president of the American Trap Shooters Association, and The Ithaca gun company named a shotgun in his honour, the Sousa Grade. Annie Oakley used an Ithaca Flues model in her competition and exhibition shooting. In 1917, Alfred Loomis and his brother-in-law purchased 17,000 acres (69 km2) of Hilton Head Island, which they established as a private hunting preserve and purchased Ithaca shotguns for use by guests. Dwight D. Eisenhower and George C. Marshall also owned Ithaca double-barrel shotguns.
The Ithaca Gun Company produced 400,000 M1911A1 pistols between 1943 and 1945, the same as Colt. The quality of the Ithaca guns was just as high as the rest. The inspector mark found on all Ithaca M1911A1 pistols is ‘FJA’ for Frank J. Atwood.
