Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
This German Third Reich Spreewerke "cyq" coded P.38 pistol was manufactured in 1944 at the Spreewerke Grottau, Czechoslovakia plant. During World War II, approximately 284,500 P.38 pistols were produced at Spreewerke, with serial numbers ranging from 501 to 10,000z. The P.38 was designed by Walther to replace the Luger P.08 as the standard service sidearm for the Wehrmacht, the unified armed forces of Germany from 1935 to 1945. While the Luger was renowned for its innovative design, it was costly to produce. The P.38 introduced several significant advancements, including the first use of a double/single action firing mechanism with a decocking safety lever, features that influenced many modern pistols. Additionally, it incorporated a visible and tactile loaded chamber indicator located at the top rear of the slide, above the hammer, and used a falling block locking mechanism that would be carried into future designs. These innovations are seen in contemporary firearms such as the Beretta 92 and the U.S. M9. While the Wehrmacht was the primary user of the P.38, with extensive use throughout World War II, the German police also utilized approximately 6,800 of these pistols.
