Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Karabiner 98 kurz, also known as Karabiner 98k, Kar98k, or K98k, was a bolt-action rifle used by the German Wehrmacht. It was adopted as the standard service rifle on June 21, 1935. This rifle was chambered for the 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge and was one of the final developments in the Mauser military rifles line. Although it was replaced by semi-automatic and fully automatic rifles during World War II, it remained the primary German service rifle until the war ended in 1945. After the war, many Karabiner 98k rifles were captured by the Soviets. They were widely distributed as military aid, so they continue to appear in conflicts worldwide as they are taken out of storage during times of strife.
Karabiner 98k receivers were stamped with a factory code indicating the date and location of manufacture. These codes were originally prefixed with "S/" and suffixed with "K" for 1934 or "G" for 1935. The intervening numeric code indicated the location. The two- or four-digit year of manufacture was stamped on the receiver ring instead of a letter suffix after 1935. The "S/" prefix was dropped and letters were used for location codes beginning in 1937, although some manufacturers retained the numeric codes past that date. The code "dot" was used for Waffenwerke Brünn in Brno from 1943 to 1945.
Although some of the rifles produced by "Waffenwerke Brünn I" were coded "dot" in 1944, it is important to note that the late 5-digit serial number guns were possibly manufactured in 1945, based on evidence such as many manufacturing shortcuts introduced by Mauser in 1945 and the trigger guard with no locking screws. Those produced by Mauser and marked "byf" show up on Mauser rifles produced in December of 1944 and later, and they also start showing up on "dot 1944" marked rifles around the introduction of the later 5-digit serial number. In addition, phosphate-finished parts show up on these rifles, finishes that were not approved for use on major components before November 1944. Based on serial studies, it has been suggested that 1945 production started at or around serial number 1. Other 5-digit guns with "a" suffixes are all 1945 date production. 1944 production rolled over from 1943 production at the suffix "w" without starting over at 1.
