Item Description

Bryant Ridge Auction Company is pleased to present this desirable semi-automatic pistol today for a penny start auction, this is the FN Hi-Power!

This example is part of the the Ultra Rare and Desirable "A-Series" Hi-Powers!

According to Anthony Vanderlindens book, "FN Browning Pistols", after the Germans decamped from Belgium in September of 1944, FN began almost immediate post- production of the Hi Power using the left over parts that has been intended for German production. Many of these very early post- Hi Powers were made with some German markings but without serial numbers. In October of 1944, FN started using the A prefix starting with number A101. Much of this production was bought up by individual allied soldiers, which is how many of them got into the US. While the A series generally had a better fit and finish than the pistols made for Germany, they still retained som German features like the Bakelite grips, no mag disconnect and altered barrel lug dimensions. Although not specifically stated in Vanderlinden's book, FN's use of the A prefix seems to have ended in 1945.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The FN Hi-Power is a single-action, semi-automatic pistol available in the 9×19mm Parabellum and .40 S&W calibers. It was based on a design by American firearms inventor John Browning, and completed by Dieudonné Saive at FN Herstal. Browning died in 1926, several years before the design was finalized.

According to Vanderlinden, page 334 (second edition) the A prefix was used on what was called liberation pistols. FN was not up and manufacturing until 1946 and was using existing parts and inventory. First ones were sold to soldiers, and by November 1945 according to Vanderlinden substantial orders were places by the Belgian military. Following on page 337 and 338 Vanderlinden discusses the Belgian contracts starting in 1945, including the A prefix. On page 338, middle image(fig.338-2) there is a High Power with an A12632 serial number, 1945 frame with a later external extractor slide with same serial number. The same explanation is Belgian Army arsenal refurbished.
