Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The development of the MK2 MOD 0 Garand rifle was a practical response by the U.S. Navy to NATO’s standardization on the 7.62mm cartridge. With millions of serviceable M1 Garands still in inventory, the Bureau of Naval Weapons sought a cost-effective solution by converting existing rifles rather than replacing them outright. Initial conversions involved inserting a chamber bushing into existing .30-06 barrels, enlarging the gas port, and installing a magazine spacer to prevent the loading of .30-06 ammunition. Though conceptually sound, early efforts faced reliability issues, particularly with the bushing ejecting during firing. The Navy eventually refined the process by adding chamber grooves to retain the bushing more securely. These modified rifles were designated MK2 MOD 0, while rifles fitted with newly manufactured 7.62mm barrels were labeled MK2 MOD 1. Contracts for conversion were awarded to American Machine and Foundry (AMF) and Harrington & Richardson (H&R), with both producing a mix of bushing-converted and rebarreled rifles between 1962 and 1966.

While effective, the MK2 MOD 0 was not without controversy. A 1964 Springfield Armory report noted concerns over the long-term reliability of the chamber bushings and declared the modified rifles unsafe for grenade launching due to excessive bolt recoil velocities. Additionally, because MK2 MOD 0 conversions are relatively easy to fake, requiring only a bushing and basic barrel markings, genuine examples are difficult to verify without proper documentation. Many authentic MOD 0 rifles were later distributed to police departments and sold as surplus, making those sources one of the few reliable ways to trace legitimate conversions. Despite their obscurity in official Navy records and the relative scarcity on the collector’s market, the MK2 MOD 0 rifles offered through the Civilian Marksmanship Program represent a rare and fascinating chapter in the Garand’s long service history—one driven by postwar pragmatism and Cold War readiness.
