According to the owner, "This gun has a blemish approximately 20% down the barrel, underneath. Additionally, the safety screw head is 'messy'. Otherwise, it seems the gun has excellent action and grips, and its bore has normal wear marks."

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Founded in 1926 under the guidance of Swedish firearms designer Carl Gustav Swebilius, High Standard entered the firearms market by acquiring Hartford Arms and Equipment Company in the 1930s. They focused initially on .22 caliber pistols. Their early offerings, such as the Model A and Model B designs, were affordable, distinguishing them in the financially constrained Depression era. By 1940, buoyed by early successes, High Standard introduced their most enduring model for the next two decades, the H-D.
The High Standard H-D made a striking impression with its robust build, defying expectations of a "budget .22", a quality envisioned by engineer George Wilson. Debuting in 1940, during an era when High Standards favored steel and wood construction, the handgun weighed 40 ounces and featured a single-stack 10-round magazine. A blowback-operated single-action pistol, it boasted a canted Luger-style grip and an exposed hammer and offered simplicity alongside accuracy. Constructed with a one-piece frame, short slide, and pinned barrel, it also boasted exceptional durability.
Available with either a 4.5-inch or 6.75-inch barrel, the pistol naturally aligns with the shooter's aim and mirrors the handling of a full-size pistol, thanks to its minimal recoil from the 22LR round. This feature allows the gun to stay on target without muzzle flip, positioning it as a direct rival to the Colt Woodsman pistol. As a result, the High Standard quickly gained popularity among shooters seeking a small-bore handgun for both recreational plinking and competitive shooting.
Following World War II, High Standard continued robust production of the basic H-D model for a decade, enjoying strong commercial success. However, in 1955, production of the H-D ceased as it was replaced by the very similar Olympic series, which itself later gave way to the Victor model. These pistols have remained popular due to their affordability and are sought after by collectors of all levels.
In total, over 200,000 H-D pistols were manufactured. Specifically, those marked simply as "High Standard H-D" numbered 6,900 units produced between 1940 and 1942. If marked as "High Standard Model H-D USA," they were among the 44,000 pistols made from 1943 to 1946 for military use, distinguished by a parkerized finish. The final iteration, marked as "High Standard H-D Military," is the most prevalent, with 150,000 units manufactured from 1946 to 1955.
High Standard persists today as a company, despite undergoing various transformations and changes in ownership and manufacturing facilities over the decades. Currently, they focus on selling replacement parts for most of their historical pistol designs. However, their support tends to prioritize the Victor model, which has been in production from the 1960s onward, more so than the earlier H-D model. They still make wonderful shooters for plinking, light competition, and small game hunting. Much like Power’s U-2 pistol, these guns are the subject of many custom suppressor makers for experimentation.
