Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 31 is a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun that represents one of Remington's finest engineering achievements. Designed to compete with the Winchester Model 1912, it featured side ejection, a major departure from earlier Remington shotguns like the Model 17. With a 26-inch barrel featuring a full choke bore, the Model 31 delivers excellent patterning for hunting applications, particularly waterfowl and upland game. The white dot front sight aids in quick target acquisition, making it a reliable choice for both seasoned hunters and sport shooters. Its blued finish gives it a sleek, classic look, while the smooth walnut buttstock and ribbed forearm ensure a comfortable and firm grip.

Despite its superb craftsmanship and notoriously smooth "ball-bearing" slide action, the Model 31 struggled to outsell its Winchester counterpart due to its higher production costs. Remington eventually replaced it with the Model 870 in 1950, a more cost-effective design that went on to become one of the best-selling shotguns in history. However, the Model 31 remains a highly regarded firearm among collectors and shotgun enthusiasts, praised for its impeccable machining and reliability. With approximately 121,000 units produced in 12-gauge, it saw service in law enforcement, including a brief adoption by the FBI in 1935, and even had a military version during World War II. While its influence can be seen in later designs, such as the Mossberg 500, the Model 31 continues to be a cherished piece of Remington’s legacy, representing an era when shotguns were built with precision and longevity in mind.
