Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The story of the Hi-Standard H-D Military .22 pistol begins with Lucius Diehm, a firearms designer who started his career with Colt. After leaving Colt, Diehm worked for Winchester, and in 1925, he founded the Hartford Arms & Equipment Co. His company produced a nine-shot .22 Long Rifle pistol called the Model 1925. Unfortunately, in 1932, Diehm's company went bankrupt and was purchased by the High Standard Manufacturing Company. High Standard modified Diehm's Model 1925 and named it the "Hi-Standard Model B".
High Standard introduced the H-D Military in 1945, thirteen years after the release of its predecessor model, the H-D. The H-D Military is a reasonably large pistol, standing 5 inches tall, and is chambered for the .22 Long Rifle cartridge. It uses a ten-round magazine and has either a 4.5-inch or a 6.75-inch barrel. The pistol has rudimentary adjustable sights that are small but functional and come with checkered walnut grips. The "H" in the model name signifies that the pistol has an exposed hammer, while the "Military" name indicates that it is similar to its predecessor, the H-D, which was sold to the War Department for uniformed services training along with Model B. The H-D Military was produced until 1950.
The H-D Military, despite being purchased by the US in smaller quantities than the H-D, became the High Standard pistol that was most commonly associated with government service. This is ironic, given its name. The H-D Military gained notoriety on May 1, 1960, when Gary Powers, a U-2 spy plane pilot, was shot down over the former Soviet Union. Powers was equipped with an H-D Military, which had a suppressor designed by Bell Labs attached to it. Powers was tried publicly by the Soviets for espionage, and the pistol and suppressor were featured in newspapers and magazines worldwide. It is believed that High Standard supplied the US with approximately 2,600 of these suppressed H-D Military pistols, some of which were sterilized for deniability by being produced without markings. In the years since Powers’ mission, additional stories of clandestine service by these suppressed H-D Military pistols have surfaced, further cementing the pistol’s status as a Cold War icon.
During its production period of five years, the H-D Military model had an impressive output of approximately 143,000 units. This firearm is known for its exceptional performance when fed with high-quality standard velocity ammunition. The H-D Military is a classic plinker that offers the shooter a memorable experience with its reliable and accurate performance.
