Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ithaca 37, also popularly known as the Ithaca Model 37, is a pump-action shotgun that has been produced in large quantities for various markets including civilian, law enforcement, and military. It is based on a 1915 patent by firearms designer John Browning, who initially marketed it as the Remington Model 17. The shotgun features a unique ejection/loading port situated at the bottom of the firearm, leaving the sides of the gun closed to the elements.

After the First World War, the Ithaca Gun Company wanted to create a pump-action shotgun that could compete with the popular Winchester Model 1912. They used the Remington Model 17 as their basis and made some changes to simplify and reduce the cost of the firing pin and ejection mechanism. This work was carried out by Ithaca designer Harry Howland in 1931. However, they had to wait for related patents to expire. When they were ready to start producing their new shotgun as the Ithaca Model 33 in 1933, Ithaca discovered a Pedersen patent that would not expire until 1937. As a result, production had to be delayed. In 1937, the shotgun was finally released as the Ithaca 37.

During the period of depression and war, it was perhaps not the best time to introduce a new sporting arm. In fact, many sporting arms manufacturers stopped production altogether during that time. However, Ithaca did produce some shotguns for military use during the war, along with M1911 pistols and M3 submachine guns.

Following World War II, Ithaca resumed the production of its popular Model 37 shotgun. The Ithaca 37 has been produced in various models and enjoys the longest production run for a pump-action shotgun in history, surpassing even the Winchester Model 12, which was the original inspiration for Ithaca's entry into the market. Throughout its history, Ithaca has faced many setbacks and changed ownership several times. At one point, the Ithaca 37 was renamed the Model 87, but the name was soon changed back in one of the many ownership changes. In 2005, production halted once again as Ithaca changed hands yet again. However, production has since resumed in Upper Sandusky, Ohio.

An article from the Ithaca Times on June 11, 2003, reported that the one-millionth Model 37 shotgun was manufactured in 1968. As of 2003, more than 2,000,000 Model 37s had been produced. The Ithaca 37 is the only shotgun still in production from before World War II.
